Why I am a Life Coach?

Having spent nearly 25 years on stage as a performer one day I found myself re examining my life goals.  I remember it clearly. I was on stage, it was during a scene change, and it was a blackout. I was playing the lead role of Caractacus Potts in the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the Palladium Theatre in London. I wanted more from my life; I wanted to give something back, in a different way.

Most of my life had been about becoming famous. In my early years I had this desire for recognition, accolade and praise.  As an older man however my life goal was changing. Without sounding soppy I wanted to add my support to making this world a better place.

So, I realized what I actually wanted to do was to help others shape their worlds to be a better place.

I’ve always had a fascination for learning and how people learn best. (Probably because I found learning so hard as a child!)

On reflection on my earlier life, my greatest learning was when I was with one-other-person. It was in that relationship of face-to-face, one-to-one communication where there was mutual understanding, challenges and most of all constant regular support that I made my greatest changes successfully.

Some of my aims as a Life Coach is to:

Help improve the quality of my client's life

Facilitate the exploration of their needs, motivations, desires, skills and thought processes to assist them in making real, lasting change.

Use questioning techniques to facilitate my client's own thought processes in order to identify solutions and actions rather than take a wholly directive approach

Support my client in setting appropriate realistic goals and then too set methods of assessing progress in relation to these goals

Observe, listen and ask questions to understand my client's situation

Creatively apply tools and techniques, which may include one-to-one training, facilitating, counselling & networking

Encourage a commitment to action and the development of lasting personal growth & change.

Maintain unconditional positive regard for the client, which means that the coach is at all times supportive and non-judgmental of the client, their views, lifestyle and aspirations.

Ensure that clients develop personal competencies and do not develop unhealthy dependencies on the coaching or mentoring relationship.

Work within their area of personal competence.

Manage the relationship to ensure the client receives the appropriate level of service and that programmes are neither too short, nor too long.
